MASSEY GRABS FIRST WIN, LEVATINO DOUBLES UP

GILLIAM, La. – The Top Alcohol Dragster final round was a repeat of last years…sort of. Gene Snow faced off against Steve Torrence only this time Snow was the car owner with Spencer Massey handling the driving duties and taking his first win of his alcohol dragster career. Massey raced to a 5.427 second pass at 264.70 mph and barely held off Torrence with a 5.434 second lap at 259.81 mph at this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Louisiana State Championships at Red River Raceway. “This is awesome! This is more than I could have ever imagined, especially driving for Snowman (Gene Snow),” said Massey in the winner’s circle. Massey has been involved with NHRA Drag Racing since he was 11 years old working on Snow’s car, running in the NHRA O’Reilly Jr. Drag Racing League, and bracket racing at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas. In the Top Alcohol Funny Car class it was multi-division champion Jackie Stidham taking the win over defending NHRA South Central Division and defending event champion Jimmy Jones. Stidham, celebrating his 25th Anniversary in racing along with his farewell tour this year, picked up his second win of the season with a pass of 5.821 seconds at 247.34 mph to Jones’ 5.897, 245.99 mph. Joining Massey and Stidham in the winner’s circle was Thomas Levatino of LaPlace, La., who took home the trophy in not one but two categories this weekend. Lavatino out ran Billy Torrence in Super Comp and then won over Shane LeJeune in the Comp Cams TCI Top Dragster class. “I’ve been racing for 15 years and haven’t won a thing till this year,” said a smiling Levatino. “Now I have three.” Levatino won earlier this year in Top Dragster at No Problem Raceway. Michael Johnson of Springdale, Ark., took the win in Comp Eliminator over 2-time defending South Central division champion Rodger Brogdon running 8.739 seconds at 154.09 mph. Johnson is the defending West Central division Comp Champion and looks to defend his title picking up his second win of the year. A pair of Texans won in Super Stock and Stock with JB Clegg out of Victoria, Texas, holding off Todd Dumas in Super Stock and James Paul of Fort Worth, Texas, beating Jerry Davis in Stock. Roger Warren ran 9.917 seconds at 162.14 mph for the win against Kyle Firestone in Super Gas and Sid Norwood picked up the win on a bye run in Super Street. In the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, it was Rich Gentili over Terry Blakely running 9.113 seconds at 144.07 mph to Blakely’s 9.803 at 131.95 mph. Rex G. Underwood rounded out the winners beating Ed Stuart in the Reher-Morrison Top Sportsman Series. Underwood ran 7.781 seconds at 173.14 mph. South Central division racers head to Cherokee County Motorsports Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 16-18.
