FIELDS SET AT RED RIVER RACEWAY
GILLIAM, La. – Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Steve Torrence and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Brandon Lewis lead qualifying for this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Louisiana State Championships at Red River Raceway. Torrence of Kilgore, Texas, jumped to the top of the field in the final qualifying session running a 5.404 second lap at 259.46 mph after loosing the No. 1 spot to Lee Callaway in the morning session. Callaway clocked in at 5.407 seconds, 265.64 mph in the first session which was enough to hold on to the No. 2 position. Both Torrence’s elapsed time (5.404 seconds) and Callaway’s speed (265.64 mph) are track records in the Top Alcohol Dragster class. Twenty-year old Lewis of Broken Arrow, Okla., ran 5.761 seconds at 249.39 mph to lead funny car. Lewis is followed by Ron Morrison and Jackie Stidham both of Oklahoma. Morrison, of Oklahoma City, is second running 5.800 seconds, 247.20 mph and Stidham of Chickasha, Okla., is third at 5.842, 242.02 mph. Comp Eliminator runner Joey Tanksley is on top with a run of 7.017 seconds with Michael Johnson second and Craig Bourgeois of Metairie, La., landing in third. Kent La Porte of New Iberia, La., held on to the top spot in Stock Eliminator with an 11.658 second pass in his ’91 Chevy and is followed by Jim Hale of Van Buren, Ark. Bossier City, La., racer Bobby Brannon sits 18th in the 60-car field. Irvin Johns put his ’02 Cavalier in the No. 1 position in Super Stock and is followed by J. Adger Smith of Texarkana, Ark., in second in his ’86 Camaro. The Top Sportsman class is lead by a couple of Louisiana racers with Keith Raftery of Lake Charles in the No. 1 spot running 6.687 seconds at 208.52 mph and Earl Folse of Raceland in second at 6.709, 207.46 mph. Glenn Barrilleaux took home the honors and the $2000 purse in the Didier Top Sportsman Shootout, a special race held Saturday afternoon. Barrilleaux ran 7.082 seconds at 196.70 but it was over at the starting line when Bob Fitzhenry left early with a red light handing the win to Barrilleaux. Kevin Krott leads the Sportsman Motorcycle field with David Latino in second going into tomorrow’s eliminations. Michael Kile of Westlake, La., ran 6.850 seconds at 195.36 to lead the Top Dragster field with John Garner of Houston in second and Kile’s son Michael G. Kile in third. Racing continues Sunday at 9 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20. The track is located at 13500 Scott-Slough Road, approximately 18 miles north of Shreveport, just off Highway 71.
