TORRENCE, JONES LEAD OPENING DAY QUALIFYING
GILLIAM, La. – In the first rounds of qualifying at Red River Raceway for this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Louisiana State Championships, reigning Top Alcohol Dragster National Champion Steve Torrence leads the field with a lap of 5.482 seconds at 260.41 mph. The Kilgore, Texas, racer is followed by rookie driver Spencer Massey with a 5.654 second run at 253.47 mph. Massey is driving for veteran racer and defending event champion Gene Snow who beat Torrence in last year’s final and retired from driving at the end of the 2005 season. NHRA South Central division Top Alcohol Funny Car Champion Jimmy Jones leads the funny car field with a 5.847 second, 246.35 mph pass. Oklahoma racer Ron Morrison is second running 6.004 seconds at 238.81 mph and Nancy Matter of Austin, Texas, in third. Michael Johnson took the provisional pole in Comp Eliminator in his ’03 Cavalier at 8.760 seconds and is followed by Metairie, La., resident Craig Bourgrois in second. In Super Stock it was JB Clegg landing in the top spot with a 10.407 second run followed by his dad John in the No. 2 spot. Kent La Porte out of New Iberia, La., leads Stock Eliminator running 11.658 seconds while Kevin Krott is No. 1 in the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson with a perfect 0.000 reaction time. Earl Folse is No. 1 in the Reher-Morrison Top Sportsman class running 6.792 seconds, 201.16 and Michael Kile leads the TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster field at 6.860 seconds, 196.76 mph. Folse is coming off a win at the Top Sportsman Dart Dash held two weeks ago in Atlanta at the NHRA PowerAde Drag Racing Series event. Racing continues Saturday at 9 a.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.
